I came here for lunch since I was in the area, in Monrovia.  I ordered their pastrami grinder with fries.  I asked the cashier to have it sliced into 4 since I knew how big of a sandwich it would be.  I could only eat a quarter of it.  It's very filling.  Their fries were crispy and good size fries.  I downed a quarter of it with soda.  The pastrami wasn't salty at all, it had perfect flavor and taste.  When you feel like pastrami or other Grinders, come down here. Staff was helpful, sandwich large can definitely be shared, or be hungry. Sandwich was good and chicken had a nice crunch from the breading. Gene's is a simple sandwich shop that just seems to hit the right spot. Even after having moved a few cities over I find myself making the weekend drive to enjoy a tasty sandwich. They have a nice patio area to eat outside on warm days. I stopped by because I was waiting on my car at a nearby body shop. Had never been before and wanted a quick bite. I ordered a steak Milanese grinder and some fries. It was funny because I asked the older gal how much the fries were and she thought I didn't have enough to pay so she gladly said she'd give them to me and that I'd pay her next time. I asked because I wanted to pay cash and I wanted to make sure I had enough. I thanked her and explained the reason I was asking. I ended up buying the whole thing on my card and I tipped her with the cash for her kind gesture. I'm happy to know that there are some people who would much rather pay for the food than see someone go hungry. With that being said the fries were ok. The grinder was worth it. I've been coming here for at least 10 years now. Every time I come in the service is great. Their sandwiches are amazing, and their daily specials are even better. The ambiance always feels homey and friendly. Today I got the beef steak milanesa for the first time, and I felt a need to make a review because I've consistently loved everything I order for the past 10 years. If you're ever in the area, this is a must-try place.
